Bed rest: Bed rest on an orthopedic mattress for 4-7 days by slightly bending the knees is ideal. Bed rest for long periods will cause weakening of the muscles and can delay healing.
Drugs:
· Pain killers: These will reduce pain.
· Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: These will prevent inflammation in the low back and will remove the edema and pain.
· Muscle relaxants: These will remove muscular spasms and will reduce nerve irritation.
· Anti-depressants: These are not the first choice in the treatment of low back pain. They must be used in the chronic period and under doctor control.
Physical Therapy:
While cold application reduces the edema in low back pain during the first 48 hours, hot application in later stages will reduce the muscle spasms and edema that had formed already. Massage, Hydrotherapy (water treatment), Ultrasound, and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) are other treatment methods and must be applied by experts by all means.
Waistbands and Corsets:
It is certain that waist movements are performed more carefully, since the waistcoats worn are reminders. In addition, they keep the waist warm. Wearing corsets, however, are not recommended other than a psychological support in general and during the healing period following operations. Corset application weakens the muscles that are the natural corset of the body and this in turn delays healing.
Manual Intervention of Spina (Chiropractic):
Way of effect of this type of intervention is unknown. However, many patients with low back pain believe in the superiority of this method. Those with serious diseases like severe dislocation in disks, rheumatoid complaints, tumors, or infections should avoid such interventions. Results can worsen the situation instead of healing.
Injection Treatment:
The location that causes the pain and drugs preventing the occurrence of pain can be given to those locations. It is also helpful in diagnosis as well as treatment.
Acupuncture, Biological Feedback (Bioenergy):
Although these treatments can ensure improvement for short periods, their effects in the prevention of low back pain and role in healing have not been proven yet.
Training (Low Back Schools, Job Environment):
Low back schools teach about the wrong waist movements in the daily life and give practical information. They help us to have strong and mobile waists. Improvement of the conditions at work and the job environment to protect the low back is targeted.
