Surgical Treatment / Low Back Pain

To whom surgical treatment is recommended?

    • Those with tumors or abscess in their spina,

To those with loss of urination and defecation control (Cauda Eqüina Syndrome), (These require emergent surgical treatment)

Those with progressive muscle strength loss, sensory and reflex losses, (Neurological deficits)

Those that complaints persists for 4-6 weeks despite treatment,

Those with spinal fractures of some types,

Those with Spondilolystesis (sliding of vertebras) or abnormal waist movements (Instability),

Those with verified diagnosis with radiological examinations performed (Myelogram, CT, MRI).

Surgical treatment is recommended to those above!!! Surgical Methods:
Simple Diskectomy: The surgeon reaches the spine through an incision of 5-6 cm under general anesthesia. A window is opened on the bone and the jelly-like cartilaginous tissue of the damaged disk is exposed adjacent to the nerve.

Removal of 30% of the disk will suffice. There is no need to put anything else instead of the removed disk. Chance of formation of a new disk is less than 1%. Risk of anesthesia, interruption of the nerve, infection, hematoma, adhesions in the late postoperative period and disability are the most important complications of disk hernia operations. Percentage for the occurrence of all these complications is less than 2% in total.

Microdiskectomy: A smaller incision is made under general anesthesia. The cartilaginous tissue is removed with the same method with the help of the microscope. Recurrence rate is somehow greater as compared to simple diskectomy.
It was reported that healing is quicker thanks to the lesser trauma during the intervention.

Endoscopic Diskectomy: There is no need for an incision in this procedure. Surgeon attempts of remove the damaged disk under the guidance of the x-ray with the help of a guide passed transcutaneously. This method cannot be applied to all disk patients.

Laser Diskectomy: Laser is used to remove the disk by burning and vaporizing it. Nerve tissue can also be damaged during this burning process. This must be used in selected patients by experts.

Laminectomy: The entire portion called lamina at the posterior of the vertebra is removed. This is used when it is required to see the narrow canal and spinal nerves.
